I hope this doesn’t catch on. Until recently, I paid for text messages, and there’s no guarantee I’ll continue to get free SMS in the future. If I wanted someone to text me on my phone, I would give them the information to do so myself.
Totally agree with Kenneth. I do use this to txt my wife, who’s plan I know has unlimited text. Just easier when I am at work and I know she’s on the road or away from a computer. Verizon is the service and it works great. I don’t think I would just text people that I don’t already normally text and get texts from - I mean, you have to know the carrier to use this - I don’t generally know someone’s carrier unless I have talked to them about phones or if we are already texting each other.
In some cases [*] the one who pays is the one who receives the SMS. ;-P
[*] In Argentina, for example.
One more tip for BPL users in India……
This is really good trick that I use…..
Email alert:
The moment you get an email you can get an alert on your mobile phone. This is how it works:
If you have a gmail ID (that’s what I use, hence am giving that example) go to “Setting” in top right corner. Then go to “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” then select “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” and put in your bplmobile email address…. that is 98xxxxxxxx@bplmobile.com (replace xs with your BPL mobile number). Now Save changes and enjoy!
Try sending an email to your gmail account through some other account, not through the same gmail account, and you will get an sms with brief details of the email. Have fun
Thanks for a great tip. I might tell others about it in coming articles
I use to use this method to forward all my gmail to it on my enV verizon phone. The mobile email client on that phone was awful and by setting up my gmail this way was like ‘push mail’ to my cell. It also only sent one txt and not the full email, so it was more so a preview and if I wanted to read the rest I could just go to my gmail on the phones browser.
Works on Telus Mobility; thanks for the tip. This will make it way easier for my husband to reach me.
Hi,
Vodacom SA requires registration so that they can send you advertisements and limit you to 3 per day. They SUCK!
hey this actually works so cool.. thanx for the info..
This is very handy for me when my husband stops by Super Walmart and asks if I want him to pick anything up while he’s there. He’ll forget something if my list is more than 3 items, so I’ve been texting him a list. Even though I have T9, texting a shopping list is a pain, and most times I’m near my computer, so I’ve been emailing the shopping list to him since I learned about it from another tech blog (whose list of servers wasn’t nearly as detailed as yours LOL). We didn’t do this very much at first, so I didn’t arrange to have unlimited text. But since Ike, I decided to pay the extra $5/month to ensure I’ll be able to communicate during any major power losses.
But, although this is convenient for me at this time, I share concerns with Kenneth and Alan. It would be so easy for spammers and marketers to rig something up to send spam texts, which are annoying, but for people that have to pay for each text msg, it will cost them in addition to being annoying.
I’m not pleased with my default T-Mobile options that either don’t have blocking capabilities, or maybe they’re buried so deeply that I haven’t found it yet (I’ve been through my menus many times, and have never found blocking options). I’d love for phones to give options similar to IM programs, where only allowed people could call, text, or send photos.
If those options are available with some unlocked phone hacks, I’d LOVE to read about it here 8^)
Log on to the My T-Mobile site and under the My Account menu select Change Services. Under Messaging, there should be options to block certain types of messages. If you have a messaging bundle, it will only block messages that would otherwise be charged, such as international messages or messages over your bundle allowance.
Don’t think they have options that would allow you to only receive messages from certain senders, though.
why dont you just write it on a piece of paper?
Nothing for Spain?
I’m trying whith 123456789@orange.es and I recive a SMS saying me that I have an email. But I don’t see the mail (sms).
Thanks!!
What is the APN for t-mobile Netherlands then? Tried all the options, but didn’t work..
is there nothing for italian carriers?
this is gonna be fun spamming friends and family lol
Please change you story to “many” cell phones and not any cell phones since most telcos have closed that option international.
Thanks for the useful info…
btw, What’s the APN for AirTel (Maharashtra, India) ?
I think this list is old, Argentina companies are different now: Movicom is now Movistar, and CTI is now Claro, so I think they should be changed their email addresses.
as far as i know, personal blocked the mail service, and now charges it $40 (near U$S10) the 500 mail to sms per month (used them for a datacenter monitoring alarm)
I’m not shure about the other companies (and shurely changed theire name)
http://gizmosms.com/
Limited to 80 characters, but you don’t need to know the carrier…
It’s not as easy
VERY USEFUL TO ME THANKS
I tried thanks
This is free only to those who don’t pay for incoming messages.
most of us don’t pay for them
just what i was looking for since “send to SMS” was retired from google toolbar.
if i’m online and looking for phone nos. or other info instead of jotting it down on a slip of paper, which invariably gets lost, i send an SMS to my cell and can retrieve later
many thanks
wintkat
You have any UK based lists?
UK ones are included as well, just go theough the second list. I personally tested the gateway for UK T Mobile and it worked.
http://www.txtdrop.com/ free texts without needing to know the carrier. Also has a nice vista sidebar widget.
[anycellnumber]@teleflip.com
Teleflip is history:

Hey,
for cincinnati bell, a smaller carrier located in the greater cincinnati region (inc. northern ky, east indiania, and through dayton) you can do (ten-digit number)@mms.gocbw.com.
In Mexico is 529991234567@mmsnextel.com.mx (ten-digit number)@mmsnextel.com.mx and works exactly like Spring-Nextel.
Wow, makes perfect sense doesnt it!
jess

Here in Mexico there’s Iusacell.
[10-digit telephone number]@rek2.com.mx

are you sure it’s free? I’ve used this before and I think the person getting the SMS still pays.
No, it’s not free for many people. Which is why you can make many an chick happy when her ex-boyfriend
Loads listed on this site.
http://www.tech-faq.com/send-text-messages-free.shtml
Thanks a lot, it’s indeed a very comrehensive list.
Doesn’t seem to work for Mobitel, Sri Lanka. Can you help?
Check out the link above, maybe they got something for SriLanka there as well
Cellular One in Northeast AZ is number@cellularoneaz.net
Rogers Canada
Note: a monthly fee of $5 applies when you subscribe to the Email -to -TXT Direct Delivery Option.
*Regular Text Message charges will apply to reply to a Message Alert.
Oh.. sorry for my earlier comment. It works fine for Mobitel, Sri Lanka.
Thanks for the info.
Great!
Anyone know how to do this with the mexican carrier telcel?
You can’t, at least you have a month plan or add the module.
Can’t seem to do it with o2, I’ve tried several combinations
You can indirectly. O2 customer needs an o2.co.uk email address then they can arrange for messages to be (selectively) forwarded to their handset as a MMS message.
This page seems to have a lot more email to sms gateways listed (atleast for my country -india): http://www.mutube.com/projects/open-email-to-sms/gateway-list/
Cool trick to know and it works great. Thanks for the info.
anyone know how to do this in australia for carriers optus and 3
thanks
T-Mobile Uk not working checked a few times.
Working for me!
Yeah, that’s a pain.
I’ve tried with and without the leading 0 and neither work.
Airtel (Andhra Pradesh,India) - number@airtelap.com
Doesn’t seem to work for Meteor (Ireland)
See article updates for additional links
tried with T mobile UK but returned fatal error
Is there a way to email pictures, the same way as text ?
A1/Mobilkom Austria:
+43664xxxxxx@text.mobilkom.at
Users first need to send a SMS containing „Info“ to 0664/68001. A confirmation should follow.
Does not work for me - i cannot send an SMS to the Number. I called the A1 Hotline, and they said the Service is not available anymore. So it seems like this does not work with A1…
And this Link is obsolete …
http://homepage.univie.ac.at/christoph.berndl/mobil/handy-fw.html
To summarize the sites with gateways:
http://www.notepage.net/smtp.htm
http://www.tech-faq.com/send-text-messages-free.shtml
http://www.mutube.com/projects/open-email-to-sms/gateway-list/
It’s a good idea to sign up a gmail account, like andrewsphone@gmail.com and have it forward all your SMS’s to your [10digitnumber]@xxx.xxx.xxx email listed in the above post.
That way its both easier for people to remember, and it hides your cell # from people you don’t want to have it.
Just go to Settings in GMail and go to Forwarding and set it up there.
I just did it, and it works.
Actually you’re making it much more complicated than you need to. You don’t need a new account because you can just tell your friends to email you at yourgmailusername+phone@gmail.com and then set a filter to forward those to your phone.
That’s actually a brilliant idea and I think I’ll do just that!
I tested out the one from Aruba and it should be “297number@mas.aw” not “297+number@mas.aw”.
In any case… this is great info, much appreciated. I live abroad so this is perfect to communicate with some relatives and friends, although they can’t reply :S
Well I know that former Cingular also uses @mobile.mycingular.com. I can say that with authority because it works for my husband and I use it daily. I’ve not even tried the new AT&T one.
There is a saying here in the south, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So there you go.
Movicom (Argentina) was acquired by Movistar and to send e-mail: number@sms.movistar.net.ar
Wow, I used to use this 10 years ago before I could get email on my phone.
Does your email ring you to let you know it’s waiting, while you’re not connected? You don’t ever text anyone? The difference between email and SMS are big. This is all about quick messaging without having to log into email and wait for connections. There is NO way my husband is going to check his email several times a day just in case I’m going to send him this quick email message: “Get bread please.”
Very sharp idea.
Its great to make use of free facilities like these.
thanks from tony
does anyone have Telstra or Vodafone in Australia?
Yeah I need that too =(
See additional new links at the bottom of the article

The Helio info in incorrect. your_number@myhelio.com goes to your myhelio email account. To send email to your phone, you must use the sprint gateway…. your_helio_number@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Wow it actually worked for me, cool thanks.
I would be interesteted in the one for vodafone australia as well!
