<furl:clipping>For years now, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for websites has been honed into a fine art with entire companies devoting considerable effort to defining best practices and touting the value of SEO for raising a site's performance on organic search listings. While I believe in the power of SEO, there is a new offering we have started providing to clients which we call Social Media Optimization (SMO). The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches on custom search engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs. Here are 5 rules we use to help guide our thinking with conducting an SMO for a client's website:</furl:clipping>

      <category>facebook</category>
<furl:clipping>Similarly, as Facebook evolves, it continues to create internal points of equilibrium within sub-networks, which Facebook calls groups or (surprise) networks. As they describe it, &#8220;Facebook is made up of many networks, each based around a workplace, region, high school or college.&#8221; Each of these networks is tightly connected, in the sense that they have many users that have strong connections to one another. Across networks, those users have more sparse relationships, just as the brain&#8217;s neurons link mostly to those neurons within their sub-networks.

For Facebook, this started in a controlled way&#8212;first with Harvard, then to other schools and finally to corporations. But as Facebook opened to the world, these clusters continued to proliferate, as Facebook encouraged users to subscribe to sub-networks.

This allows Facebook to continue to grow and avoid some of the pitfalls that I described in an earlier article that has affected almost every other social network from MySpace and Friendster to Classmates.com. These social networks in many cases are seeing lower value because of their growth: unwanted user connections, untenable navigation, and large numbers of inactive profiles. Instead of pushing the entire network to grow, Facebook merely creates new branches allowing the individual sub-networks to remain in control.</furl:clipping>

<furl:clipping>2. Wellness and Preventive Health Management
For purely economic reasons as much as anything else, the healthcare industry is beginning to put a great deal of emphasis on preventing health problems and on increasing patients' health in general, as opposed to treating them in a clinic or emergency room after they've had a problem. Overall, this is a good thing, although there is the risk of undesirable side effects once the health plans get into the act. (Mandatory exercise and ice cream rationing, anyone?)

      3. Power to the People!
With today's unparalleled access to information on the World Wide Web (especially free, high-quality sites like Wikipedia), today's patients are singularly well-informed about their own conditions. The patient has the advantage over the doctor, in that he or she has to only learn about their own condition or illness, and that knowledge can go very deep indeed! This causes a power shift in the patient-physician relationship; in the past, it was a given that the doctor knew more. Therein lies the business opportunity: patient-education sites are on the rise.</furl:clipping>

<furl:clipping>Professionally designed work looks solid, the same holds true with the written word. Typos and grammatical errors express a disregard for the user and effects the image of your company being able to deliver good service. Some of these practices may be obvious, but worthy of review.

      12.gif

Consistency. This comes up a lot, you may even say it consistently appears. The more a website works the same every
time the more the user feels comfortable with a design. If a user is taken mysteriously to another page, that looks foreign from the original, this trust is broken and they will question the experience.

The user must feel in control at all times. Inconsistencies just lower the perception of quality.

Place your name and logo on every page of your site. Make the link back to the homepage when on an internal page.

      23.gif

About Us Photograph. When I see a photo of the real person or team of people on an about us page I feel like I am getting to know them and trust them more. How do I know it is real? I don&#8217;t, but I like to think that it isn&#8217;t that hard to tell the difference from a stock photo and a genuine picture. This really applies to small businesses or bloggers, but can be used anywhere there is an about page. While you are at it, keep it up to date.
      about.gif

      32.gif

High Quality Photography. When you are selling and need to showcase products, use the best quality photographs you can. User can not touch and feel your product like the may be able to in a store so detailed close-ups and large images help. Use screen shots for service or software.

      42.gif

Text/Writing. Words are meant to be read. Making text size small may look good to a certain degree but ultimately hurts when trying to read. Contrast is very important, if it is low then eye strain is an issue. An interesting study done by Alyson L. Hill from Department of Psychology of Stephen F. Austin [State University] on Readability Of Websites With Various Foreground/Background Color Combinations, Font Types And Word Styles points out these issues.

Spell checking should be done always, as well as the correct use of grammar and formatting. Here is Jakob Nielsen&#8217;s research on the subject of writing for the web.

Jakob Nielsen&#8217;s Useit.com addresses the issue of Usability for Senior Citizens. Eyesight and lack of simplicity is something that makes most websites unapproachable to seniors. Remember that older people are the fastest-growing group of Internet users. text.gif

The image to the left is an example from a Breville product of text that is a bit small, thus hard to read. It would be much easier to read a point or two larger.

The look and design is clean and very nice aside from the legibility issue, but it is also done in Flash so it can&#8217;t be enlarged within the browser.

      52.gif
Navigation. This goes back to consistency. When a user comes to your page, article or site they are coming in from all the other pages, articles or sites out there. If you are selling do no deviate from them that much.

      nav.jpg

Do not reinvent a websites navigation. If the user has to figure out how to move around within a site you have lost. Keep it on the top or the sides, but don&#8217;t make someone figure out how to navigate your site or you will surely lose them in seconds. Let them know where they can go and where they have been using breadcrumb trails and site map.

Whitespace. If you look at the design or layout of any luxury or high end brand you will see whitespace. Designers use this to create room to guide the viewer&#8217;s or user&#8217;s eyes around the various elements. If all the content is cluttered or cramped together it looks cheaper and low quality.

Design By H&#252;mans, where you will find unique high-end t-shirts designed by artists from around the world, has a great showcasing of how the empty space helps the flow and leads the eye. Also look at the prominent placing and size of the price.

When a design uses whitespace effectively it allows for precise placement of products/words making the user/viewers job that much easier in getting the main idea. For further reading on whitespace visit this article from A List Apart.

Use of email. Let a user know how you will be using their email. Let them know you will not be spamming them or selling them out to another party. People are cautious to give out an email, so reassure them. Of course you can fool someone into giving you their email, but that is short-term thinking and will surely cripple your brand and ruin any long-term relationship.</furl:clipping>

<furl:clipping>1. Understand Decision Making: A decision cannot be made with out both emotion and reason at some degree. There for in order to begin persuading users, you need to not only appeal to their emotions, but to also understand their reasoning behind making a decision.

      2. Understand Emotion: It is important to understand drivers of different emotions. For example what evokes interest, hope, excitement, and anticipation? Why do people ride rollercoaster&#8217;s? Why do people play the lottery? Once you&#8217;ve picked the right emotions, knowing how to evoke these emotions in your design will help you to keep your users engaged.

      3. Create Persuasive Interactions: Once you have an idea of the emotions you want to invoke, you can begin to create interactions that elicit these emotions. For example, think of our rollercoaster ride. If you could just walk up and jump on, it takes out a lot of the excitement. While we all complain about the long lines at amusement parks, they are a big part in playing into our anticipation, fear, and excitement. It turns a 30 second ride into a 1hour experience, and in the end makes you feel more like your money was worth it.

      4. Create Persuasive Visual Design: Today more than ever, people make decisions quickly. We are in a generation of ADD web users. Therefore it is important to visually grab their attention. What words, pictures and colors will most likely appeal to your audience? Some good exercises that can be done to help are things like word associations, and A to B testing.

      5. Create Persuasive Content Design: Use content to market the benefit, how is this deal good for the user? One way to do this with cost is to break down numbers in to more manageable terms. For example, instead of &#8220;only $299 pr year&#8221;, try &#8220;just 24.99 a month&#8221;. Some other ways are to show the value of savings, are interactive calculators, comparisons to other services of a higher cost, etc.

      6. Design Guided Paths: Guided paths are used as a discovery channel for the users. It&#8217;s a way to up-sell and cross-sell the user and keep them exploring your site. An example of this is with insurance, let&#8217;s say you buy car insurance, maybe the next thing they show you is how you can now also save on homeowners insurance with them, or how you can add another car to your insurance plan, or join their road side assistance club.</furl:clipping>
