Kudos to the American voters for a historic election, unfortunately they're getting the same old policies, and even the same old people in power. If you (still) believe that Obama will bring change, read this eye-opening article. You can also listen to an interview with the author on http://lawanddisorder.org/.
It's sad, but this is the political reality in a 2-party system without real competition.

This is a phantastic little program that enables you to quickly listen to any Internet radio station in the world. It displays the artist and song title and you can record directly to your computer. The list of preset radio stations is huge and sorted by genre, region, language and regularly updated. It's not perfect yet, but the best little radio player ever!

<furl:clipping>While static stretching is still almost universally practiced among amateur athletes — watch your child’s soccer team next weekend — it doesn’t improve the muscles’ ability to perform with more power, physiologists now agree. “You may feel as if you’re able to stretch farther after holding a stretch for 30 seconds,” McHugh says, “so you think you’ve increased that muscle’s readiness.” But typically you’ve increased only your mental tolerance for the discomfort of the stretch. The muscle is actually weaker.</furl:clipping>

We might be in for a "surprise" on Tuesday (it shouldn't be a surprise anymore since it happened verifiably in 2000 and 2004 as well as 2006), nothing else but a landslide win by Obama might be able to prevent the rigged vote counting.

"As Robert F Kennedy Jr, nephew of JFK, has exposed, the US is one of the few democracies that allow private, partisan companies to secretly count votes using their own proprietary software.
Moreover, the vast majority of western democracies have independent Election Commissions to oversee voting methods and corroborate the results. The US does not.
Most election ballots next week will be tallied or scanned by four private companies - Diebold, Election Systems & Software (ES&S), Sequoia Voting Systems and Hart InterCivic.
According to Kennedy:
Three of the four companies have close ties to the Republican Party. (...)

Inequality in major U.S. cities rivals Africa: U.N. Habitat Report - Reuters

New York city ranks 9th among 120 major cities as the most unequal city in terms of income distribution in the world. That means the inequality is on a level comparable with cities like Lagos. Now I know why I like living here so much ;-)
Furthermore, according to this annual "State of the World's Cities" report from UN-Habitat, race is one of the most important factors determining levels of inequality in the US and Canada, with African-American men having the same life expectancy rate as people in China and India despite the US being a much richer country.

<furl:clipping>"It is clear that social tension comes from inequality. The trickle down theory [that wealth starts with the rich] has not delivered. Inequality is not good for anybody," said Anna Tibaijuka, head of UN-Habitat, in London yesterday.

The report found that India was becoming more unequal as a direct result of economic liberalisation and globalisation, and that the most unequal cities were in South Africa and Namibia and Latin America. "The cumulative effect of unequal distribution [of wealth] has been a deep and lasting division between rich and poor. Trade liberalisation did not bring about the expected benefits."</furl:clipping>
